Gimme Gimme Gimme More Cher: The Cher Show honors the pop icon and legend
We all know Cher as the iconic superstar that she is today, but the story of how she became a star led to the creation of a new Tony Award®-winning Broadway musical about her life. Cher has been featured in hit movies, written and performed songs that everyone can sing along with, was a fashion influencer before that was a thing and even starred in multiple TV shows. She has touched every aspect of pop culture in a variety of ways. But do you know her story?
Early in her career, Cher met entertainer and songwriter Salvatore “Sonny” Bon in 1962. Cher agreed to be his housekeeper in exchange for Sonny featuring her as a backup singer on many of his records. Eventually, Cher and Sonny’s friendship evolved into something more romantic, and they married in 1964. The couple’s first No. 1 hit in 1965 was “I Got You Babe.” Together they had six top 10 hits, but as the iconic couple’s momentum began to slow in the music industry, they turned to TV. The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour which aired for three years. Shortly after their TV show ended, Cher and Sonny divorced, but that only catapulted Cher’s career to the next level.
Cher began to explore her love for acting and eventually landed a role in the Broadway show and film, Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. She later received an Academy Award for her supporting role in the film Silkworm in 1983.
Although every film Cher starred in is noteworthy (Mask, Moonstruck, Burlesque, Witches of Eastwick just to name a few), her performance in Mamma Mia! “Here We Go Again is most noteworthy because of the popularity of the star and the musical. Cher played Ruby Sheridan in the film. Donna’s extravagant yet neglectful mother. Producers originally wanted Cher to play the role of Tanya, Donna’s best friend. Cher ultimately passed on the opportunity to play Tanya because she felt the character was too similar to who she is as a person. Ironically, Cher’s own wardrobe was used to dress her character in the movie. You can see a silver bomber jacket worn by Ruby in the film, the item came straight from Cher’s closet.
Cher never lost her love of music throughout all her acting endeavors. She returned to the music scene and released a string of comeback hits including, “I Found Someone,” “Heart of Stone,” “If I Could Turn Back Time” and “Believe” that played a role in cementing her place in history. Cher is known as one of the greatest entertainers of all time and is the fifth-ranked female artist with the most Billboard U.S. Hot 100 charted singles. She has reached the Top 10 on the Hot 100 at least once during each of four decades—the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.
